United Way of Southeastern Connecticut offers opportunities that connect volunteers with local agencies in need of support. Volunteer teams and individuals are now being recruited to work on four projects over the next year on Days of Caring. Wondr Nation is the Days of Caring Presenting Sponsor to assist the agencies with costs related to each project.
Days of Caring are large-scale, one-day volunteer projects at nonprofit organizations that create a positive impact in the community and make meaningful, Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center will present the inaugural Maggie Jones Environmental Hero Award on September 22 at the organization’s annual Green-Tie Celebration.
Maggie Jones, director emeritus, will be honored as the first recipient of the award bearing her name. Jones served as director of DPNC for 27 years, during a time of significant growth and maturation for the organization.

Three area women joined the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center’s Board of Trustees on October 14 at the nonprofit’s annual meeting.
Rebecca M. Nolan, Jennifer Herbst and Claudia Bachmann-Bouchard join the board, which oversees the operation of the center. They will each serve a three-year term.
Nolan is a landscape architect who grew up in Mystic, and returned to the area in 2017. She lives in Pawcatuck. She is Associate Director of Strategic Partnerships at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center (DPNC) has announced plans to reopen after closing due to COVID-19 concerns on March 13.
The natural history museum at the Nature Center will be open Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. In order to protect staff, summer campers, and visitors, DPNC’s buildings will remain closed to the public on weekdays.

As the novel coronavirus spread across Connecticut from west to east, myriad nonprofits were being called upon to assist residents as illness struck, job losses mounted, and safety nets were strained.
Nonprofits both large and small have seen an increase in requests for help and an uptick in users, whether it’s food pantries, homeless shelters, or nature preserves. While managing the healthcare aspects of the virus, Hartford HealthCare is witnessing the important impact of these NPOs.

Mystic, CT (November 11, 2019) — The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center has received a grant from The Edward and Mary Lord Foundation of Norwich that will advance the Coogan Farm project that began five years ago when the Center acquired the property.
The three-year grant, which totals $250,000, will “allow us to further our collaboration with our neighbors the Denison Homestead and Mystic Seaport The Lyman Allyn Art Museum will present its annual Summer Fest on June 22, 2019 from 11am – 4pm. Admission is FREE all day to the family-friendly community event featuring food trucks, live entertainment, and activities on Museum grounds and inside the Museum. In the event of rain, everything but the food trucks will move indoors to the Museum’s galleries, auditorium, and art/dance studio.
Summer Fest will feature the music of some of the region's great performers. Bluesman Ramblin' Dan Stevens will Pfizer’s Groton Laboratories and the Clinical Research Unit, New Haven will support more than 60 programs in Southeastern Connecticut, the greater New Haven area, and southern Rhode Island through its 2019 competitive grants program.
Priority was given to programs that bring science and math to students from elementary through high school. Additional awards were made for programs that provide for the underserved or to support local civic and cultural institutions. He will be honored at a dinner celebration on Waterford, CT – Charter Oak Federal Credit Union’s Community Giving Grant Program funded nine grants totaling $32,000 in its first quarter.
Grant recipients included High Hopes Therapeutic Riding, Inc.; Little Angels Program; Madonna Place; Falcon Music Boosters, Inc.; Salt Marsh Opera; S.T.E.P.S., Inc.; and Norwich Human Services. Awards ranged from $500 to $3,000.

Mystic, CT – The Denison Pequotsepos/Coogan Farm Nature and Heritage Center has revamped its Homeschool STEM program to better serve its students and families and to accommodate the recent growth the program has seen.
The Nature Center has been offering a monthly homeschool STEM class for more than a decade. Last year a second class each month was added because of increased demand. In advance of the 2016-17 school year, the program has been reorganized to better meet the needs of the students who attend. Mystic, CT – The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center will host its first-ever Butterfly Extravaganza from 2 to 4:30 p.m., Saturday June 27 at the Nature Center, 109 Pequotsepos Road, Mystic.

DPNC’s Summer Nature Camp 2015: A New Approach to an Old Favorite
Mystic, CT – The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center’s 2015 Summer Nature Camp has undergone a makeover - the same great experiences for children ages 3-15, brought to a new level with the addition of weekly theme camps.
“We’re excited to be unveiling a new approach to our Nature Camp,” said Camp Director Pauline Gaucher, who took over running the camp for the 2014 season. “We spent the winter developing themes for each week of camp that Mystic, CT (Dec. 23, 2014) - The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center wants your mice. Requirements are they be dead, chemical- and poison-free, and frozen.
The Center used to receive donated frozen mice from Pfizer Inc. and Charles River Laboratory, both of which raise laboratory mice for research use. The companies donated their excess mice to the Center, to feed our 14+ birds of prey and our 6+ snakes. Recently both companies have stopped the donations.
This means an additional expense of $1,800 to
